5 Tips to Boost Your Metabolism

'5 Tips to Boost Your Metabolism'

Improve Your Metabolism If you overindulged during the holidays, despite your best efforts to stick to a healthy diet and exercise routine, don't worry. Here are five tips to help you boost your metabolism, so you can get back on track by the New Year.

Don't Skip Breakfast. Eating breakfast will help you stay focused, give you energy and bolster your willpower, so you make healthier food choices throughout the entire day. Eating breakfast also "wakes up" your metabolism to get it working as you head to work.

Eat More (Often). Eating smaller meals more often throughout the day sustains your metabolic activity and keeps your blood sugar levels from dropping. When your blood sugar levels drop too low, it is easy to overeat when you are finally presented with the opportunity to do so.

Weight Train. Lifting weights helps you amass more muscle mass. And, muscle mass burns more calories throughout the day than fat mass, even while you are at rest.

Practice Interval Training. Weight training is important to build muscle mass, but cardio exercise is also essential to burn calories while you exercise and support healthy heart function. The next time you run, walk briskly, swim or ride your bike, rev up your intensity for 30-second intervals; then resume your normal speed. Doing so allows you to work out for less time than you normally would while maintaining the same pace, with the same — or better — results.

Go Green. By this, we mean that you should sip green tea. Green tea is packed with antioxidants to help fight free radicals in your body. More importantly, however, the active ingredient in green tea, catechin, has been shown to ramp up metabolism. Studies have demonstrated that individuals who drank green tea lost more weight than the study participants who did not drink green tea. Research has shown that drinking five 8-ounce cups of green tea a day can help you burn about 90 more calories a day.
